Luxembourg’s Director General for Development Cooperation visits Myanmar
Mrs Martine Schommer, Director general for Development cooperation at the Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign Affairs, paid a visit to Myanmar from 19 to 22 February 2013. Accompanied by Ambassador Marc Thill, she met high representatives from the ministries of Hotels and Tourism, Education, National Planning and Economic Development and Foreign Affairs in Nay Pyi Taw.
The meetings were focussed on presenting Luxembourg’s engagement in development cooperation highlighting in particular its experience in projects pursued in Laos and Vietnam that could be emulated in Myanmar. A visit to UNODC projects in Shan State (see picture, with Country Manager Jason Eligh on the left)) as well as meetings with regional directors of WFP and UNDP in Yangon provided the Luxembourg delegation with a view on ongoing UN projects in Myanmar matching Luxembourg’s concerns for Development cooperation. As she met the deputy director of UNHCR, Mrs Schommer extended her support to the installation of emergency.lu, Luxembourg’s communication platform for humanitarian purposes, soon to be provided for the benefit of UNHCR activities in the Karen and Mon States.
