Publié le vendredi 07 mars 2014

In the follow-up of forums organized on subjects of national and regional politics, the Institute for Security and International Studies (ISIS) of the Faculty of Political Sciences of Chulalongkorn University organized a gathering around the question of the Rohingyas under the title “Myanmar’s Rohingya Question: Domestic Consequences and Regional Implications”. The speakers were Dr Kyaw Yin Hlaing, a Myanmar political scientist and presently  a close advisor of the Government Ministers U Soe Thane and U Aung Min, Ms. Gwen Robinson, a journalist reporting on Myanmar and currently associated with ISIS, Greg Constantine, an American photographer, and Dr Jacques Leider, counsellor at the Luxembourg Embassy. Jacques Leider’s presentation was entitled “The Communal Conflict in Rakhine State – History and the Terms of the Debate”. The various speakers recalled the tragic situation of the refugees while insisting on the necessity to take into account the sensitivities and legitimate interests of the two conflicting communities, due to the climate of extreme tension that prevails in the local context. The Q and A session was monitored by Ajarn Thitinan Pongsudhirak, the director of ISIS, and reflected the complexity of humanitarian and legal issues that the Myanmar Government and neighbor countries have to confront.
