Luxembourg participates in the Global Forum on Remittances 2013 in Bangkok
The Global Forum on Remittances – Sending Money Home to Asia takes place in Bangkok from 20-23 May 2013 with the participation of Luxembourg’s Ministry of Development Cooperation.
As all over the world many people are forced to migrate to find better economic opportunities elsewhere, they send money back home to support their families. The annual volume of these funds, estimated at between 420 to 500 billion dollars, is considerable and dwarfs official development aid (ODA).
Known as remittances, these funds are not merely safety-nets for poor families, but offer a great potential for economic and social development.
The Luxembourg Government has recognized this potential early on and endorsed the role of a pioneer in this area, providing an active support of the IFAD's Financing Facility for Remittances (FFR) since its inception in 2006.
