Luxembourg present at the EU-Myanmar Task Force

Publié le jeudi 14 novembre 2013

The launch of the EU-Myanmar Task Force took place in Yangon and Nay Pyi Taw on November 13-15, 2013. The creation of this high level Task Force was decided during President Thein Sein's visit to Brussels on March 5, 2013, and was enshrined in the Comprehensive Framework on EU policies and support to Myanmar  adopted by the Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg on July 22, 2013. The purpose of the Task Force is to provide comprehensive support to the transition in Myanmar by bringing together all of the tools and mechanisms – both political and economic (development aid, peace process support, investments) – available to the EU.

The Task Force was co-chaired by the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice President of the European Commission, Lady Ashton, and U Soe Thane, Minister in the President's Office. In Nay Pyi Taw, the participants were addressed by President Thein Sein, before several agreements and letters of intent between the EU and Myanmar were signed.

Luxembourg was represented at the Task Force by Ambassador Marc Thill, who participated in the Development Forum. Luxembourg's business was represented by a member of the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce, as well as by representatives of the newly created Myanmar Business Council in Luxembourg. Mr Robert Goebbels, former Luxembourg Minister for Economy, was part of the delegation of the European Parliament.
