New rules for Schengen Visa

Published Monday February 03 2020

Following the entry into force of EU Regulation 2019/1155 replacing Regulation 810/2009 of the Visa Code, the following changes have been made:

- Applications can now be submitted no earlier than 6 months (9 months for seafarers) and no later than 15 (calendar) days before the start of the planned trip.

- The visa fee is now 80 euros and 40 euros for children between 6 and 12 years old. The only applicable exemptions are granted to diplomatic and service passports (free visas). Young people between 6 and 18 years old will pay the appropriate tax. Participants in seminars, conferences, sports, cultural or educational events organized by NGOs under the age of 25 will pay the normal fee. This rule is not rigid, however, and it is always possible to reassess the situation in specific cases.

- The decision on a visa application must be made as soon as possible or within 15 days after the consulate has established that the admissibility criteria are met. When a more detailed examination is necessary, the decision period can be postponed to a maximum of 45 days from the date on which the request was deemed admissible.

- Visas issued with a single entry have an extended validity period of 15 calendar days.
