Jean Asselborn spoke with Don Pramudwinai, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand

On 11th March 2021, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Luxembourg Jean Asselborn spoke via videoconference to his counterpart from the Kingdom of Thailand, Minister of Foreign Affairs Don Pramudwinai.

The two heads of diplomacy expressed satisfaction at the strong bonds of friendship that have united their two nations for many years. The Ministers took stock of the bilateral relations between Luxembourg and Thailand and discussed prospects for their future development, including in the fields of green and sustainable finance and financial technology.

The Ministers reviewed the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic and noted the importance of promoting multilateral cooperation to overcome this challenge affecting all of humanity.

During the exchange, Minister Asselborn voiced his concerns and those of the European Union with regard to the increasing use of repression against young protesters in Thailand, including pretrial detention, for exercising their right to freedom of expression.

The Ministers assessed the tragic situation in Myanmar after the military coup of February 1st, which Minister Asselborn condemned in the strongest terms. Jean Asselborn emphasized that this military coup is an unacceptable attempt to forcefully reverse the results of the last general election, which reflect the will of the people of Myanmar. The coup is an attempt to put an end to the democratic transition in the country and to the power sharing agreement between the civilian government and the military. Minister Don Pramudwinai informed his counterpart from Luxembourg about the current mediation efforts led by regional partners, and in particular by ASEAN, in the hope of returning Myanmar to a state of democracy, respect for human rights and good governance.
