Two Luxembourgish co-productions presented during the Beyond Animation Film Festival in Thailand
Recently selected to represent Luxembourg at the Oscars in 2023, the animated feature ICARE by Luxembourg director Carlo Vogele, as well as the film Where is Anne Frank! have been included among the headlines of the 3-week program of the Beyond Animation Film Festival. Organised by the French Embassy in partnership with TACGA, the second edition of the Animated Film Festival includes the screening of a variety of movies, masterclasses and mentoring sessions to be held in Bangkok, Chiang Mai as well as 5 new cities across the country.
An exceptional year for Luxembourg’s animated film industry
After picking up a second César in February for the best animated feature film (The Summit of the Gods), Luxembourg was back in the spotlight this summer in Annecy at Europe’s most important festival for animation, where Luxembourgish co-productions won not just one but a total of three prizes!
While the films Saules aveugles, femme endormie(Doghouse Films) and My Love Affair with Marriage (Antevita Films) each received a jury mention, the feature Le Petit Nicolas – Qu’est-ce qu’on attend pour être heureux (Bidibul Productions) managed to leave with a Cristal award, the equivalent of the Palme d’Or in Cannes.
Despite lacking a long tradition of national cinema, Luxembourg’s animated film industry has been growing steadily over the past decade. Proactive and generous public support schemes aimed at promoting the development of audiovisual production since the early 1990s have given room to producers to focus on ever more interesting screenplays and graphic designs, and to attract a pool of talented animators and multimedia artists recognized far beyond its national borders. Today over 20 production companies and animation studios are active in the Grand Duchy.
